The rock warriors, retold by Siale
Before Maori explored the beautiful lakes of Rotorua, other people lived there. These people were known as Patupaiarehe. They lived on the top of Ngongotaha Mountain. One day the trees was moving but Rotorua people said it can’t be the wind so 10 or 20 men went to look at why were the trees moving. It was the rock warriors coming to take over the Patupaiarehe people homes. So the Patupaiarehe people went to their leader Tongakohu who was so angry she went to the top of Ngongotaha mountain and said a magic spell Te tuahu-a-te-atua. Then she lit a small fire and began to repeat an ancient magic spell she had learned when very young on the rock warriors. When the rock warriors was getting tired the leader of rock warriors said keep going but the rock warriors said can we stop for a little but? The longer they stood still the wearer they became. Soon they couldn't move their feet, their skin was getting stiff and cracking. Patupaiarehe were very happy when their chief was able to stop the war party and they lived on Ngongotaha mountain for many years afterwards. The rock warriors can stil be seen on the top of Ngongotaha mountain today.
